Afternoon explore Colombo’s rich heritage with a chauffeur-guide. Stroll along Galle Face Green, visit the historic Dutch Hospital precinct, and experience the vibrant Fort and Pettah markets. See landmarks including Colombo Fort Railway Station, Slave Island, Beira Lake, Viharamahadevi Park, Cinnamon Gardens, and finally, Independence Square, a symbol of Sri Lanka’s freedom.
With a packed breakfast board the train to Jaffna enjoying the ever changing scenery. Stay at Jetwing Jaffna for 3 nights.
After breakfast board a private boat and sail to Delft Island, called the Neduntheevu or Neduntivu by the Tamils. It’s the largest island in the Palk Strait. The Portuguese built an impressive fort on the island, though sadly now in ruins. Also visit the courthouse and fascinating Pigeon Tower. Lunch on the island.
Jaffna city tour includes the Jaffna Portuguese Fort built in 1618, the ancient Lord Shiva Kovil – Naguleswaram, the Keeramalai pond – which is said to have healing propetries. Then the bottomless Neelawarai well – the bottom hasn’t been found yet! Finally, visit the Kadurugoda Temple, a collection of 20 small Temples made out of coral rocks – miniature stupas built to enshrine the remains of 60 Arahat monks who died in a famine.
After breakfast drive to Trincomalee. Afternoon visit Koneshwaram Kovil. Stay at The Anilana Nilaveli for 2 nights.
Thiriyaya Watadage is the oldest Buddhist Temple in the world and houses hair relics of The Lord Buddha. The ancient Temple was reputedly built while Lord Buddha was alive. Then visit the Seruwawila Mangala Raja Maha Vihara constructed during the reign of King Kavantissa, and contains the sacred forehead bone of Lord Buddha.
Morning drive to Sigiriya & check-in at Aliya Resort & Spa for 2 nights.
Afternoon feel the adrenaline rise on a jeep safari in Minneriya National Park…maybe a herd of elephants appears silently out of the jungle… or the cry of a heron breaks the still air.
Early start to visit the stunning Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Climb to the top of the awe-inspiring Rock Fortress of Sigiriya. Built by King Kasyapa, who imprisoned and subsequently murdered his fathe. View the elegant frescoes of the Heavenly Maidens and wander the ruins on the summit. Afternoon visit the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, once a busy centre of commerce and a leading spiritual centre. Muse over the Gal Vihara, explore the Quadrangle and see the frescoes in the Tivanka Image House.
The ancient Cave Temples of Dambulla are simply superb with beautiful vibrant frescoes graced with the stunning 153 statues of the Lord Buddha. Stay at Jetwing beach for 2 nights.
